Moving Gutter System (MGS): The Role of the Gutter Trolley in the Automated Cultivation Cycle

In modern commercial greenhouse horticulture and the automated cultivation of lettuce and herbs, the Moving Gutter System (MGS) constitutes a highly efficient infrastructure. Within this closed-loop system, the gutter trolley serves as an essential link, ensuring a continuous and hygienic flow of clean lettuce gutters throughout the entire production phase. [1]

The Cultivation Cycle and the Role of the Gutter Trolley

The process flow is divided into four defined phases, where the gutter trolley handles the vital logistics between harvest and replanting:

  1. Harvest: The fully developed plants are harvested, and the used cultivation gutters are emptied of organic residues.
  2. Cleaning and Disinfection: The empty gutters are automatically fed into an industrial stainless steel gutter washer. Here, they undergo a thorough mechanical and chemical washing process to eliminate soil residues, algae, and pathogens.
  3. Return Transport via Gutter Trolley: The clean and disinfected gutters are stacked or fed directly into the gutter trolley. The primary task of the trolley is to transport the prepared gutters across the cultivation lines and back to the start of the production line (the transplantation area). [1]
  4. Transplantation and Re-insertion: In the transplantation area, new seedlings are automatically pricked and planted into the sterile gutters. Subsequently, the gutters are moved back out into the growing zone, and the cycle begins anew.

We Offer Two Types of Solutions

  • Manual Gutter Trolley: An ergonomic and smooth-running trolley designed for greenhouses with manual walkways between the cultivation lines, where the operator positions the trolley manually. In addition, we at Danvan offer two different optional features that can be selected:
    • A spray boom capable of spraying from the top down onto the plants.
    • An automatic gutter conveyor that automatically pulls the gutters over to the opposite side of the trolley.
  • Fully Automatic Gutter Trolley: A wireless, battery-powered, and autonomous unit that runs on the MGS track rails, which constitute a permanent, integrated part of the Moving Gutter System. The system is activated by a single push-button command, minimizing the need for manual labor and significantly optimizing logistics speed.
